EmonCMS Developer Meetup and Discussion Thread

Good day Forum.

I would like to make a thread for discussion regarding Development of EMONCMS.

I have been trying to add multiple features, such as extra graphs, widgets, data generators etc, but the best I have done is some hacked up version that barely works.

Some issues that I have with EMONCMS is the lack of documation and examples. The code is not commented and newbies such as myself have a hard time understanding the implementation of the coding.

My suggestion to greatly improve the OpenEnergyMonitor project:

We have a online meetup with interested developers. We work on basic, and just understanding of how the program runs. I believe that if we can get some basics, such as adding a widget properly into the current system, we can have alot more people(such as myself) contributing alot more to the front-end of the system, while main contributors work on core functionallity such as timestore etc.

Of course this is just a suggestion and this is a open project so no-one is obligated to provide support or make it better, but I firmly believe with just a little tweak the project can be boosted into something amazing.(its already amazing :D)

Let me know your thoughts on this and if im completely wrong?

Regards

Re: EmonCMS Developer Meetup and Discussion Thread

Hello XaroRSA, good idea, I'm happy to help, by online meetup,  do you mean something like google hangout, IRC or a specific forum thread? maybe a specific day and time? Lets try it

Re: EmonCMS Developer Meetup and Discussion Thread

Hi Trystan.

Yes something like google hangout or something similar will be good. Lets set a date for this coming weekend(6-8September).

Can all interested individuals please post in this topic? And timezone you are in.

Ill compile a list of topic i think we should cover, then we can have a 72hour session this weekend.

Regards

Re: EmonCMS Developer Meetup and Discussion Thread

I might be interested in partcipating as well if I am available. I have not dived into the Emoncms code yet but and interested in giving back to the community. I am in the GMT-4 timezone...

Re: EmonCMS Developer Meetup and Discussion Thread

Why I was saying 72hours, is that we can set up the room and post items during the course of the weekend. So that users can contribute over the course of the weekend.

Not like we need IMMEDIATE feedback, almost like a IRC channel.

But lets give it a shot, see how it goes and work on it from there.

Re: EmonCMS Developer Meetup and Discussion Thread

Im: GMT+1, Maybe a combination of both, so a focused 2 hours on google chat or irc where we can chat in realtime and then normal forum discussions otherwise.

Any time friday, or 8-10am and after 5pm GMT+1 on saturday would be best for me. . but I could move things about if those times dont fit.

Re: EmonCMS Developer Meetup and Discussion Thread

Ok I suggest we have a google hangout session(or skype? im open to suggestions havnt done something like this before so i dont know what works best) on friday evening(6pm+), and run a irc channel for the weekend.

I will compile a list of topic I would like to discuss. Anybody is welcome so add suggestions, but my topics will be overall implementation, not HOW TO AJAX PLZ HELP.

The purpose of this first session will be to establish an overall picture of the Exact workings of Emoncms, and perhaps one example per topic. From there, the horde can run with it and build on.

Please inform as many interested devs to this session, this will be fun and educational!

Re: EmonCMS Developer Meetup and Discussion Thread

Is it OK if I come on board as an non-participating observer?

I haven't the skills to make a worthwhile contribution to the discussion, but as a 'regular' in the forum, I would like to know more about emoncms, and perhaps learn a little!

Re: EmonCMS Developer Meetup and Discussion Thread

Lets try google hangout on friday, I think that works better for me than skype, then I think it would be best to keep discussions on the forums for the rest of the weekend so that what is discussed can be found by people interested in the same things looking for it in the future, if that doesnt work then we could always go over to an IRC, what do you think?

Paul: yes that would be fine, good idea.

Re: EmonCMS Developer Meetup and Discussion Thread

I think it might be easiest to setup an irc this evening, looks like you can just enter a username (no need to register) and channel name here on http://webchat.freenode.net

if that is good for everyone then the channel name will be openenergymonitor

Re: EmonCMS Developer Meetup and Discussion Thread

I have also create a google document that could be used for notes if we need it, no google account needed to use it:

Re: EmonCMS Developer Meetup and Discussion Thread

I see there's no usual crowd in #openenergymonitor just a bot, sad, I also have a few questions, that are easier to discuss in relatime rather then via a forum ;)

Re: EmonCMS Developer Meetup and Discussion Thread

Ah we should do another meetup. I have added a few features such as:

Steelseries gauges.

SMS Event notification via twilio.

Downloading feed data from a calender into a excel sheet.

Current doing my own emonTX board with a NRF24L01+, range on them are pretty good!

Is anyone ever in the chat room??

Re: EmonCMS Developer Meetup and Discussion Thread

The idea with the irc was more to do a dedicated session rather than for it to be on all the time, so it works great if we dedicate an event for a particular topic. Otherwise I think it would be best to keep things forum based.

Sounds like great developments XaroRSA, would you be able to do a series of forum posts on what you have done?

Re: EmonCMS Developer Meetup and Discussion Thread

Yeah will do for sure Trystan, need to just revise the code a little bit. Any way i can get in on the new emontx devolpment?
