WiFi reconnection issues.

Hi,

I've been experiencing a recurring issue ever since I installed my emonpi, whereby when my internet router (BT Home Hub 5) automatically reboots (about twice a month, in the early hours of the morning), my emonpi does not automatically reconnect to the network via wifi. I am using the provided Edimax dongle (EW-7811Un).

I have searched the forum and the internet about this situation and found these:

http://wiki.openenergymonitor.org/index.php?title=Raspberry_Pi#Using_WiF...

http://openenergymonitor.org/emon/node/2941

https://github.com/openenergymonitor/emonpi/commit/ee5d811341d6c47a920e7...

The last link is to the 'wifi-check' script, which is definitely installed on my Pi, under: '/emonpi/wifi-check'. My emonpi is up-to-date (vlow-write-v8.5) and the most recent wifi outage occurred a couple of days after the most recent update check.

The presence of this script on my emonpi does not appear to help in my case.

I have some questions:

1. Why is the 'wifi-check' script not working?

2. Will disabling power-saving on my wifi dongle help, as mentioned in the second, linked thread?

3. The file '/etc/modprobe.d/8192cu.conf' does not currently exist on my emonpi. Why is this and should it exist already?

3. Would it be possible to add some troubleshooting guides for this on the emonpi wiki page, in order to make it easier to find this information?

Thanks,

Rich.

EDIT: Clarification.

Same problem! Have you solved?

Paul (PB66) has problems (here: "New emonpi setup with Edimax wifi dongle keeps disconnecting") with a BT Home Hub. May or may be not be linked/the same problem.

Re: WiFi reconnection issues.

Sorry folks,

I haven't fixed this, I'm afraid. It's just something I've had to put up with; it still drops out about twice a month and doesn't reconnect without a reboot.

I'm not sure why the WIFI Check cron job (linked above) is not working in this case, but I did notice a while back, somewhere else on the web, that this sort of behavior is common in Raspbian Wheezy, but was fixed in Jessie AFAIR.

I'll have a go at an OS update and let you know if the WIFI drops out again ASAP (it is probably due to do so again soon). If the same behavior persists, I may consider backing up my data and doing a manual re-install with the latest Beta OS image from http://openenergymonitor.org/emon/node/11799

I'll let you know either way.

Re: WiFi reconnection issues.

I just updated my emonCMS via the web interface and then did an apt-get dist-upgrade and reboot via ssh.

I'll keep an eye on the results of this and see if I continue to see WIFI dropouts.

Re: WiFi reconnection issues.

I was right (and just in time): The BT Homehub rebooted at 06:41 this morning and the connection was lost and was then not re-established again on reboot.

The updates mentioned above did not prevent this from happening again.

I think I'm going to have to back up my data, take my emonPi apart, re-flash the SD card and then try out the new beta version in production.

I don't have a lot of time at the moment to search for and read the instructions for doing this, so if someone could please post a link (or links) to information about this process, I would be very grateful. I'm not sure how common this problem is, or if people just take it in their stride and manually reboot regularly without reporting this behavior, but I want to help to make sure that this does not continue to happen.

It looks like I'm going to have to help in beta-testing the next version, whether I like it or not.

Don't get me wrong, I'm fully on board with helping out to get the next iteration of the software stack working well, it's just that I haven't had much time in the last six months or so to tinker with this.

I'm just about to get the opportunity to use up most of my remaining holiday time at work and will get to spend some time on this problem over the next couple of weeks, so any pointers at this stage will be much appreciated and hopefully reciprocated.

Any and all comments are welcome.

Thanks,

Rich.

Please follow this link, zoom out and check out the "Flatlined" periods to see where my WIFI connection has dropped out and then subsequently been restored:

Re: WiFi reconnection issues.

This method works for my Raspi:

I've got to step away from the computer right now, but I'll take a look at the link ASAP.

Thanks,

Rich.

Re: WiFi reconnection issues.

Rich, looks exactly the same as I have seen Pi2 with Jessie and RFM69. I've given up on this and gone back to PiB with RFM12 but with Jessie and the latest software 9.3.   No drop outs yet.   :-)
