Analysis of building temperature

I have been collecting temperature data on each floor of my home, as well as outdoor temperature.  I'd like to be able to view the impact of making improvements to the house.  I'm not quite sure what I should use as a metric.  I'm thinking I should use a heat decay per hour with respect to outdoor temperature.  I could use the daytime data due to the fact that my thermostat drops to a lower temperature while I am at work.  As a result, I will have a nice long decay curve to use.  Has anyone had an experience making such a metric?  Are there any standard methods for doing this?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After poking around I found a link to withouthotair.com.  There's a lot of information on this website, including a section titled "Smarter heating". Contained within that section is information regarding the calculation of power used to heat a building.  I'd recommend that everyone check out the site.

Thanks Trystan.  You've got a lot of great stuff being worked on there.  I'll need to study up on things a bit, but hopefully I can contribute something valuable to your work.
