How does the meter know whether power is being consumed or generated?

Can one mains meter perform(measure) both functions at the same time? How does it know which is which, whats usage of the power company's power by the homeowner and whats being generated coming into the grid?

It is down to the relationship between the voltage and the current. Read AC Power Theory - An introduction
