Website theme

I've just put together a new theme for the website, trying to add some colour and also make the content fit a bit better as we were having a couple of overflow issues.

I have also put the recent comments and twitter feed etc on the front page only so that the other pages look a little less busy. Im not sure if this is a good idea, because it is also really useful to be able to click on recent comments from the side bar on any page, so maybe its worth putting some of the activity blocks back on?

Any thoughts on this and any other suggestions for the theme, for content layout etc would be very welcome.

Is having the links for emontx, emonbase, glcd, cms in the top bar an improvement?

ps: does the menu work in safari and IE?

Re: Website theme

I had pretty much gotten used to navigating the overlapping comments/nodes/activity links in the side bar, but using the Home page is OK too I guess. Maybe you should allow users to select this or the old theme as they prefer?

There is some new broken stuff, though. The new theme has replaced the OEM icon with the evil Drupal icon in bookmarks and browser address bar. Gross!

Also, the image file of the LT Spice simulation in the "one power supply" topic is now "404 - not found".

Menus display properly in Firefox 3.6.3 and Opera 9.64

Re: Website theme

Thanks Sharkey, no I think your right having them on each page is useful for navigation, I have put them back there. We have been thinking that it would be good to find a way to condence the recent comments, active forum topics and recent activity into one block but have been having a bit of trouble doing so, the recent activity block at the moment shows recent comments but instead of showing the comment title it just shows the page title.

I will sort out the drupal icon and the LTspice images, i did not realise.

Re: Website theme

If anyone does want to switch to the old theme, when logged in, goto my account, then edit and select your prefered theme.

??? Maybe I'm not smart enough to find this in the profile edit form, but it didn't show before, and it doesn't show now. Remember that Drupal Administrator accounts can be configured differently to User accounts, you may have to log in as a regular user to see what we see.

Also, it appears that Guest posting of comments has been disabled?

Re: Website theme

Sorry, yes your right, it is enabled now. Yes we disabled guest posting due to spam and though it was reasonable to require login but I guess from our recent experience that does not get rid of spam either, what do you think?

Re: Website theme

I don't think that Guest posting by itself is a bad thing, but it should require entering a guest name to help eliminate confusion. I don't believe that Drupal does this natively, it would require a module or core hack. When I was running a forum on my site (phpBB2), I modified the code to require a guest name and location to cut down on spam and to help identify posters. A whole page of comments, all by "Guest" are a nightmare to decipher.

BTW, I'm noodling with some Drupal code to perhaps come up with a block that can display forum posts, activity, and comments integrated into one list. No promises on the results, Drupal is code as it would be written by $800-an-hour lawyers!

Re: Website theme

I'm not a fan of guest posting - it creates too many problems! The obvious problem is spam, but also multiple aliases can undermine a genuine discussion. By posting as a member, other features are unfolded such as subscribing to a feed to keep up with the discussion and other comments which 'guests' would not enjoy.

I like the new theme, it is starting to fall into line with EmonCMS styling, which is clear and to the point.
