Help a newbie - something not right!!

Hi. I've got my new kit set up , with an EmonTX, and a Raspi Pi with the RFM12Pi board attached, and EmonCMS up and running, and I've installed the CT123 firmware on the TX. All good so far, lights are blinking in unison, and data is going into the MySQL database.

The only problem is the data being sent from the TX isn't making a lot of sense. There are two columns of data, the first being the unix timestamp - which is accurate. The second I presume should be a current(or power) reading? The value in this column is constantly the same (between about 67 to 72), no matter how much power is going through the cable the CT clip is on. In fact, if I unplug the CT clip from the TX board, it carries on sending out the same range of values!

I just tried reinstalling the firmware, which didn't help. I dunno what to do next .. I'm beginning to think maybe I've built the board wrong. I'd be gratetful for a few pointers if anyone has ideas what might be going on??

The 60 - 70 W is reasonably typical of the result you get from noise picked up by the analogue input, so the emonTx is probably working. But how are you using your c.t.? Have you read http://openenergymonitor.org/emon/buildingblocks/ct-and-ac-power-adaptor...

Have you tried running either of the standard OEM sketches for measuring current/power?  Look for "Arduino Sketch", part way down the Building Blocks home page

A couple of basic tools on my summary page may help.  MinAndMaxValues will show whether your sensors are giving sensible values (on a scale of 0 - 1023), and RawSamplesTool will show you a simple diagram of each of these waveforms.  

Once you've got these basic checks to work, then the more complex aspects should stand a better chance of working too.

Thanks for the pointers guys .. sorted now :) I wrongly presumed you could clip the sensor round any AC cable, and had it round my 4 way extension lead for testing purposes. Now have it clipped round the live coming in to home, and it's running fine. Rob
