EmonTx usb to Uart

Have just built the EmonTx, installed the Arduino IDE, downloaded libraries & firmware to my laptop but cannot get the Windows XP drivers working for the USB bridge. They download OK & appear to install but Device Manager doesn't recognise the bridge when its plugged in and Tools>Serial Port is greyed out in Arduino.

Any thoughts ?

Re: EmonTx usb to Uart

The emontx does not have an usb port... the usb plug is only for power

do you use an cable that ends in a header plug?

Re: EmonTx usb to Uart

yes, I'm using the programmer that came with the EmonTx

Re: EmonTx usb to Uart

On the programmer, check for tiny solder whiskers between the pads on both the USB end and the other end.

I spent ages trying to debug a similar (but not indentical) problem, only to discover that the programmer appeared to have been put together by a five year old with Parkinsons.

no joy, the soldering on the programmer isn't great & I've removed some solder splashes dotted around the board ....

Re: EmonTx usb to Uart

Is it a permissions problem with Windows?

I believe there have been manufacturing problems with the programmer so my money would be on that - if you can't get any further, contact Trystan.

Also check for other faulty software - as mentioned here in the last post: http://openenergymonitor.org/emon/node/1950

Swapped out the usb lead that came with the programmer with one lurking in the bottom of a drawer ... success.

Re: EmonTx usb to Uart

Is there any good way to debug the plug?

I'm having problems with "programmer is not responding" errors and I am wondering if there are some steps to take to check whenever the thing is working or not.

I was thinking of using the serial terminal on the device and see if i can get a echo around from tx to rx. However since this is not a serial port but a FTDI port I am not sure if I can just hookup rx & tx and see an echo working.

Is it correct the blue light is always on ?

Re: EmonTx usb to Uart

Got it solved. was a driver issue. After I installed a Win XP on a vmware box and upladed the sketch from there all worked fine.
