Building a controller to dump surpless power from solar PV into immersion heater, based on emontx/emonGLCD and a phase-angle controller (I bought one of these: http://www.united-automation.com/evr-25-phase-angle-power-regulator-stack.
Have been a commercial software developer for 25 years or so, mainly in C++, including some embedded systems experience.
Recently had solar panels installed at home (3.3 kWp), and felt it was a shame to be buying gas to heat the water when we are exporting loads of free energy!
I will need to build a little interface circuit to fed the 0-5V control input on triac stack from a 3V PWM output on the EmonTx - basically this is likely to be a Op Amp buffer amplifier and LPF. WIll then run a length of CAT5 from the fuse box (where EmonTx will be) to the hot water cylinder. With 8 wires, I figure I should be able to run the control voltage, plus a CT and Temp sensor for display only.
